Letter To Cable News Anchors
To: Anchors across the Big Six
We want climate change news coverage. We would like to see how people around the world are dealing with the problem. There is plenty of climate news:
- Political news: AOC, Ed Markey, Sunrise Movement, Green New Deal.
- Economic news: Food prices, coastal real estate prices, health costs, storm damage, income loss.
- Dire news: climate change “feedback loop”, droughts, floods, premature deaths.
- Hopeful news: DiCaprio’s documentary. Greta Thunberg and the students.
There is all kinds of news out there: how come you are not reporting it? Really, how come? You would like to, but upper management is afraid? What are they afraid of? Advertisers pulling ads? Aha.
So who would they be, these advertisers that would pull ads if you started to cover global warming? They wouldn’t happen to be oil companies, would they?
Let’s get this straight: the oil companies are threatening to pull their ads if you even mention climate change? That’s kind of like extortion. Or reverse blackmail. Something underhanded, anyway.
How about this: Talk to an independent journalist. Let him or her know about the negative pressure from management on stories about climate change. Blow the whistle.
Tell the journalist why you are not reporting any news on climate change.
We would genuinely like to know.
